The landscape of Sotkamo is mainly formed by the chain of 13 hills and gorgeous lakes. Sotkamo has – surprisingly enough – one of the best sand beaches in Finland. The Hiukka beach by the Lake Sapsojärvi in the Sotkamo town center is often quoted as ‘the Riviera of Kainuu’ with its sand ridges. Just a few steps from the beach, one can find a Finnish baseball arena. The local baseball team ‘Sotkamon Jymy’ is one of the best teams in Finland and has won the national championship 20 times. And next to the magnificent chain of hills one can find the Vuokatti tourism area. Vuokatti is Finland’s most versatile and active year-round destination. Vuokatti is the best cross-country skiing resort in Finland and skiing has been made simple for enthusiasts of all levels. There is a dense well kept and marked net of skiing trails (190 km) around the area. The ski trails of Vuokatti and Sotkamo offer perfect terrain for everyone from professional athletes to beginners, and those who like to enjoy a beautiful sunny spring day on skis. The ski trails are being taken care of according to the high Olympic Training Center -standards for both free- and classic style skiing and everyone can ski on them.
